This has been one of the funnest things that I have knit, lacewise and I plan on doing it again, next time, selfishly for myself. The pattern is the Swallowtail Shawl designed by Evelyn A. Clark. You can find the pattern in Interweave Knits Fall 2006. Except for the nups in the Lily of the Valley part of the lace, I think this would be a good beginner shawl. An adventurous beginner to lace would probably enjoy it. It took me about one week to knit, doing knitting in between other things. The pattern calls for lace weight and I think it is actually in Knit Picks Shadow or another one of their lace weights in the magazine. However I chose to do it in a fingering weight using a hand dyed merino sock yarn from Fearless Fibers Handpainted Yarns on eBay. She has some lovely things, was very quick to ship and I think I will use hers again. This colorway was called Marrakesh and is olive/ivory/acid green. Well, I need to get dressed and get this wrapped for the recipient, my scrapbooking friend Sonia who has been there for me through thick and thin in my California adventures...she makes it bearable here and she is on the short list of things/people/places I will miss when we leave northern California!

Completed Swallowtail!

Thank you for sharing about Fearless Fibers - I bookmarked their site in Etsy last night - but I just wasn't sure if I'd be brave enough to try them out. Your recommendation really helps me feel like I can go ahead. Of course, now I just need money! :)

1) We both live in small homes where children run free (and sometimes wild ;). How do you block your shawls? I'd use the floor - but I'd have to find a corner no one would trample! LOL
2) What needles do you prefer for this type of knitting - I love my Addi Turbos...but they seem 'thick' if you know what I mean.
